- Summary:
With industrial development, the number of teenagers near factories has significantly increased, leading to a noticeable rise in crimes and issues related to sexuality. According to clinical observations, this group exhibits high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, a growing number of unwed mothers, and an increase in induced abortions. Tragically, many of these young individuals, who arrived in Seoul with great aspirations, end up as social outcasts. Most of these teenagers live in shared accommodations such as factory dormitories. The collective lifestyle of adolescents, whose sense of self has not yet fully developed, poses significant risks for moral decline in matters of sexuality. For this reason, I emphasize the need for purity education programs targeting teenagers in workplaces. However, such initiatives are rarely implemented. Authorities and companies alike must urgently devise measures to prevent the increasing moral lapses among teenage workers in industrial areas. (Gi-Ha Park, M.D., Director of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Korea) Unwed mothers have been stereotyped as the social concerns created by female workers in industrial zones or female high school students within a gendered discourse on sexuality that seeks to control female behavior through purity education. This discourse has been legitimized under the authority of experts, reinforcing prejudices that depict unwed mothers in Korean society as young, poorly educated, and sexually promiscuous. These biases have persisted for decades, shaping societal perceptions of unwed motherhood.
