  • Summary:
Is there another word in our vast lexicon that remains as eternally fresh, beautiful, and powerful as the word love? A renowned Christian thinker from Japan once said that love is an absolute and unchanging moral principle. The idea is that politics, economics, society, and culture must all be rooted in love. One of the pressing societal issues gaining prominence today is the plight of unwed mothers. Factors contributing to this issue include a morally lax social environment, broken family structures, economic hardship, lack of proper sexual knowledge, and parental neglect. We must regard the struggles of our less fortunate neighbors as our own and extend care and support to them. (Bong-Hee Kim, Director of Research Institute for Women’s Issues)

This article was contributed by Bong-Hee Kim, Director of the Research Institute for Women’s Issues (established in 1952), an organization founded to address issues faced by women and promote gender equality through legal reform and social movements. The piece illustrates how, at the time, even women's advocacy groups regarded unwed pregnancy and childbirth as forms of sexual deviance or as threats to the stability of a healthy family.
