■ Abstract
The phenomenon of international adoption in Korean contemporary history is an undeniable legacy. While the studies of general migration and diaspora in Korea have dealt with the pattern of Korean migration in a comprehensive way, the studies of historically identifying or visualizing the relation between Korean female migration and gender have not been properly conducted. As seen in general migration such as labor migration and marriage migration, international adoption also shows a ‘feminization of migration’ phenomenon that the number and presence of women remarkably increases. In this regard, there is needed a multi-faceted research to historicize the experiences and memories of Korean female adoptees who have been forgotten and excluded from Korean contemporary history and transnational migration history.

The purpose of this study is to historicize the lives and memories of Korean female adoptees through the adoption experiences and transnational identity formation of Korean women who were adopted to France in the 1970s and 1980s, and their process of ‘becoming a mother’. To this end, we will analyze the contents of interviews and handwritten testimonies of Korean female adoptees published in Hamkae, a regular publication of the French Korean Adoptee Association <Racines Coréennes>. Through this study, by listening to the real voices of Korean female adoptees in France, it will be possible to examine transnational migration history from various angles and contribute to broadening the horizons of related research.
