■ Abstract This study identifies patterns of human rights violations in the intercountry adoption process and suggests improvements to protect the rights of those involved. Interviews with 50 participants—39 adoptees, one adoptee's child, five biological parents, and five practitioners—revealed key violations: the right of adoptees to live with birth families, birth parents' access to sufficient information to make informed decision, and adoptees' right to know their origins were all infringed upon. The study assesses these violations in light of international norms, such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Hague Convention. It also provides suggestions for assisting those affected by these issues. The significance of this study lies in its comprehensive and triangulated analysis, incorporating the experiences of adoptees sent to various countries, birth families, and professionals. Based on the findings, the study suggests legal, institutional, and practical improvements for intercountry adoption. |
