■ Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the inherent causes of about 200,000 overseas adoptions made in the Korean society over 60 years after the Korean War. Through the research on the adoption decision process among various factors, I will discuss the “normality” criteria that governs a society. For this purpose, six birth mother cases were interviewed in-depth with their experienced memories of their transnational adoption cases and the collected data were further analysed. As a result of this research work, two persuasive factors were found involved in their adoption decision and mothering give-up process. They are firstly the legal restrictions of the society that defines only some types of family as ‘normal’ and secondly the ‘cognitive’ influenced behaviour of individuals in the society based on the given legal framework. Lastly, based on the results of this study, I suggest additional research work necessity on the individual’s identity and their body‘s identity that could not be explicitly expressed due to the ‘normality’ standards, imbodied and imposed in a society.
