■ About the Book
DESPERATE MOTHERS An historical fact based novel. 1839 Bristol England. Queen Victoria has been on the throne for just two years. It is an age of prosperity and optimism, but for many, life is little more than a never ending misery. Thrift, hard work, religious and moral piety is established as true Victorian values. In this society women are not supposed to have sexual impulses and young unmarried ladies are expected to remain in a state of simpering virginity. Sex outside of marriage is a deadly sin and those who violate this rule are fallen women; their children born in sin and marked for life. For desperate unwed mothers the choices are Workhouse, Prostitution, Adoption or Death. To these young women, a baby farmer, willing to adopt their baby for a sum of money, seemed the perfect solution. How could they know that the society that pilloried the unmarried mother and did little or nothing for the unwanted child would create a monster?

■ About the Author
Raymond Leighton has always written in some form, with hundreds of poems, several prize winning short stories and various newspaper articles. He has also produced local community road shows and edited a monthly local magazine for several years.

With the advent of the modern day computer came the opportunity and means to venture into the world of the author

His first novel, 'THE AFTERLIFE DEBRIEFING' took two years to write. Web site: http://www.afterlifedebriefing.co.uk/

This was closely followed by his second novel 'DESPERATE MOTHERS'

Ask him what THE AFTERLIFE DEBRIEFING is about and he will say that everyone thinks about this subject at some time in their lives and the reader will very quickly feel that they themselves might be the main character in the novel.

Ask him about DESPERATE MOTHERS and he will assure you that you will cringe at the hypocrisy and injustice of Victorian society toward the unmarried mother. It is hardly surprising that this hypocritical society would produce a fearful product of the times. THE BABY FARMER. His third book CONFIGURED FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE suggests that we are all capable of achieving those things we want to do in life, but we often fail to reach our full potential.
