- Summary:
Released from prison, Doil Heo returns to a world that fills him with seething anger. His rage reaches its peak when he learns that his younger sister, Misoon, has been defiled by factory manager Jiyun Cho. Desperate to find Misoon, who has vanished without a trace, Doil teams up with Se-jeong Kim, an acquaintance he encounters by chance. Despite Se-jeong’s assistance, their efforts to locate Misoon, who is now pregnant, prove futile. Meanwhile, Jiyun emigrates overseas, leaving Misoon grappling with despair. In her anguish, she surrenders her baby to the Christian Adoption Program of Korea (CAPOK), but the decision leaves her floundering in the depths of emotional torment. Tragically, as Misoon struggles with her circumstances, her mother passes away without ever reuniting with her daughter. This series was featured in the Kyunghyang Shinmun from September 1, 1974, to September 30, 1975, and was later published as a book by Taeyang Munhwasa in 1977. This novel features the Christian Adoption Program of Korea (CAPOK), a domestic adoption agency specializing in facilitating the adoption of children born to unwed mothers. Through the character of Misoon, the younger sister of the protagonist Doil Heo, the narrative captures the experiences of unwed mothers in the period. It portrays the societal stigma surrounding unwed pregnancies, which often compelled women to relinquish their children for adoption through agencies like CAPOK. Misoon’s subsequent struggles and aimlessness highlight the emotional and social challenges faced by unwed mothers during that era.
