  • Summary:
Hyunsook Shim, 36, president of the Christian Adoption Program of Korea (CAP0K), presented findings on the 17th from a year-long study of 250 unwed mothers who sought CAPOK's adoption services. The study revealed that 66 women (26.4%) became unwed mothers while living with their parents, while 184 (73.6%) had left home, either as runaways or to find work. Among these women, 34 reported engaging in sexual relations within a week of meeting their partner, 60 became pregnant within three months, and 145 conceived within a year.

The data showed that 22% of the women were under 19, and 74% were under 24. Educational attainment was also examined, with 48.8% having completed only elementary school, 28% middle school, 23.6% high school, and 2.4% holding college degrees.

The report highlighted the rising number of unwed mothers in factory areas and noted an unexpected trend of women engaging in brief encounters leading to pregnancy—some after fleeting meetings during Christmas or on trains. Shim stressed the urgent need for sexual education and chastity programs to address the growing challenges faced by adolescent girls.
  • Archiving Note:
Studies conducted on unwed pregnant women seeking to place their children for adoption have contributed to the construction of stereotypical images of unwed mothers as young, undereducated, and either sexually uninformed or promiscuous.
